Hey, friends! Today I wanted to share my knowledge on precious metals. When starting my business I strictly used gold-plated metals. It was inexpensive to get my hands on, and was a great option with a new business with little cash-flow. However, after realizing this is not the quality of jewelry I had envisioned for my business, I decided to make the switch to only purchase and create gold-filled metals. So you may wondering, what is gold-filled jewelry, and why does it matter?
Gold-filled jewelry is composed of a thick gold layer that is permanently bonded to a base metal, often brass or sterling silver. Usually, there are about 2-3 layers of this thick coating, unlike gold-plated, which is a much thinner layer. In turn, gold-filled jewelry is highly durable and can withstand decades of wear. If well taken care of, this type of jewelry can last a lifetime.
Gold typically makes up 5 percent or more of the jewelry’s total weight, which is 100-times the amount of gold in plated jewelry. Gold-filled contains real gold, but it is not entirely made up of gold like a solid gold piece of jewelry. Which ultimately becomes a luxury investment.
So, why do I need this?
Have you ever bought a really cute pair of earrings from one your favorite chain stores, only to find that it tarnished within a few short months. Chances are, you bought a gold-plated piece of jewelry that is not built to last. Gold-filled jewelry can be a bit more expensive, but it beats having to re-buy jewelry and spending more money in the long run.
Gold-filled is your best option that wont break the bank when purchasing jewelry to last. Purchasing pieces you love that are timeless and well-designed, will help you create your dream jewelry and accessories wardrobe.
Aside from my silvers and stainless steel pieces, all gold jewelry on my store is gold-filled and built to last. I have had so much fun bringing in new pieces to my store and helping others build their jewelry collection.

Gold-filled jewelry, also known as gold-overlay or gold-fill jewelry, is a type of jewelry made by bonding a layer of gold to a base metal (usually brass or copper) through a mechanical and heat process. This results in a piece of jewelry that has a substantial layer of gold on its surface, which makes it more valuable and durable compared to gold-plated jewelry. More info:

Unlike gold plating, gold filled jewelry is tarnish resistant and won’t turn your skin green. It is more durable than plated jewelry and won’t tarnish as badly.
